There are no major movements this month, compared to December last year. But there are some extremely challenging energies to deal with, especially when they involve giant planets Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius coupled with the unpredictable influence of Uranus in Taurus.
We just have to keep remembering, as we move through this turbulent time, that “We are all creatures of the stars and their forces, they make us, we make them, we are part of a dance from which we by no means and not ever may consider ourselves separate.” Doris Lessing
6 January Mars moves into Taurus
This placement stabilises the impetuous pace of planet Mars, which is helpful if you feel it is time to slow down and take a breather. There may be a sense that the world has run out of steam and now needs to relax and replenish its resources. Mars in Taurus is all about conserving energy rather than wasting it on unnecessary action. It is a pragmatic, sensible approach which counts the cost of each and every effort expended. Quality, lasting results are valued over rushed attempts to cover corners and bridge gaps.
This is a good time to focus on re-building damaged structures and laying foundations for a more natural and fulfilling lifestyle. Your goals should be kept simple – motivated by the desire to substitute stress for leisure, pleasure and enjoyment.
Your aim should be to consolidate your finances and to save money rather than spend it. The exception would be if you were contemplating putting your resources into long-term, built to last projects. Profits would be slow to earn but the rewards would be tangible and worth the wait. If you do not have any spare cash to put in at this point, you could consider investing your time and energy instead. Perhaps your goal is to gain personal satisfaction and enjoyment so reinforcing your bank balance would not be a priority.
As Mars in Taurus can be quite stubborn, don’t be surprised if you are feeling less inclined to move or give in on matters that are important to you. You may be more willing to fight for what you esteem and value. You could find that other people are also extra determined to stand firm. Don’t bother to get involved in arguments with them. There is no point, as neither of you are likely to back down! Just agree to disagree and let it be.
Between 13 & 23 January Mars will conjunct Uranus in Taurus and square Saturn & Jupiter in Aquarius. This is not the time to get forced into fighting battles that are not your problem. Leave it to the relevant authorities to sort things out. Take care of your own concerns. If you are safe and secure, you will be better placed to offer practical support to others when they need it.
8 January Mercury moves into Aquarius
This placement of mind planet Mercury could help us to come up with lots of innovative ideas and trendy techniques which will carry us forward into the future. It may not be necessary to invent completely original concepts, as Mercury in Aquarius shows us how to come at things from a fresh angle. Something you thought you knew all about can look quite different if you turn it upside down or back to front.
This is a good time to look at certain factors in your life in a new light, especially if you find them difficult to deal with. Perhaps if you approach them from a changed perspective, they might not seem quite so awkward, unpredictable or inconsistent. You do not want to lose the quirkiness that intrigues you and keeps you interested. But you would like to smooth out some of the snags in your dealings with them. When I say “them” I am referring to the current circumstances of your life – which may or may not involve other people.
Between 9-12 January Mercury will square Mars & Uranus in Taurus and conjunct Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius. This energy might manifest in serious disagreements caused by clashes between incompatible ideas and ideals. It could create a sense of deadlock, which is unfortunate and possibly even dangerous because all movement grinds to a halt and nothing can be resolved. Hopefully, higher level intelligence will swoop in to save the day and matters will be settled in a way that is beneficial to all concerned.
Try not to get involved in idealistic arguments as you are unlikely to convince diehards who are already firmly entrenched in their own point of view. Just keep broadcasting your own opinions, rather as though you are talking to yourself. Who knows, you could end up changing a few minds!
8 January Venus moves into Capricorn
This placement puts an emphasis on the importance of talents and abilities as well as personal flair and charm when it comes to achieving ambitions.
The problem is that many people find it difficult to advertise their assets. This is especially so in cultures who frown on self-promotion and condemn it as “showing off”. What is wrong with drawing attention to the gifts that come so naturally to you? Surely they are a cause for celebration. They are valuable resources that are waiting to be recognised, appreciated and used. They can help you to earn a living and make your life more comfortable, enjoyable and fulfilled.
This is the perfect time to get to work on your CV to ensure that it defines areas in which you are especially proficient, thanks to the talents you were born with. There is no need to exaggerate your abilities. If you esteem and respect them, your understated self-approval will reinforce their worth and convince any prospective client or employer that you are just the person they have been looking for.
Between 9-14 January Venus in Capricorn will trine Mars and Uranus in Taurus and square Chiron in Aries. The energy favours the establishment of harmonious partnerships built on shared ideals, clear objectives and common sense values. Such collaborative agreements could contribute to a sustained healing process which holds the potential to eliminate suffering, illness and disease. Let’s hope that we are talking about combatting Covid!
But this happy marriage between Venus and Mars, with the added impetus of Uranus, could also be a positive influence for you personally. The sense that you are more settled in your life and contented with your lot will help you to resolve underlying issues that have been a source of pain in the past. You are taking a more laid back approach to the future, ready to meet and greet whatever is coming towards you.
13 January New Moon at 23-24° Capricorn
This is not the sweetest and brightest of new moons as it is heavily involved with the two shadiest forces within the solar system: Pluto in Capricorn and Eris in Aries. Both these planets tend to cause trouble and test us to our limits. Their true motive is to make us stronger and more self-assertive – to transform us all into noble warriors in the war between illumination and ignorance. But their methods are tough, and few survive them without scars.
My advice would be to brace yourself for a turbulent time which could feel like flying through a thunderstorm or sailing through hurricane force winds. On a global scale we can anticipate intense atmospheres, whether man-made or natural, or a combination of both. But if you stay calm and detach yourself from the drama, you will be fine. I’m not advising that you rush out to stock up on tinned goods or barricade yourself behind a barbed wire fence. But I would suggest that you batten down the hatches and take sensible measures to keep yourself safe.
Practice the art of mindful meditation, where you remain aware of the world around you but separate from it, as though you are living in a parallel existence that is immune from the destructive aspects of so-called “reality”. True, it is a reality, but it does not have to be yours.

About 12 hours after the New Moon, the Moon moves to conjunct Saturn in Aquarius and square Mars in Taurus. This stubborn yet rebellious energy does not bode well for the wellbeing of world peace and harmony between nations. It looks more like the chaos that comes from lack of collaboration with everyone insisting on doing things their way. But you do not have to get involved with the clashes between warring factions. Stay cool, calm and collected and keep your level of consciousness high. Don’t allow your light energy to be extinguished by primitive emotions like rage and fear.
On 14 January, when the Sun conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn and Venus in Capricorn trines Uranus in Taurus, you may feel empowered by a sense of your own freedom and self-sufficiency. You are not dependent on other peoples’ judgements or opinions. The respect you hold for your own resourcefulness and the sincere appreciation you have for your ability to cope in a crisis is worth more than all the praise and prizes in the world.
19 January Sun moves into Aquarius
For me, this is where the new year really begins. The zodiac sign Aquarius is all about innovation. It is time to break away from old patterns, procedures and protocols, unless they can be evolved to fit the future. This is particularly so as the Sun moves into Aquarius in 2021.
On 17 January, Jupiter in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus – the two great planets most closely associated with evolution – formed a 90 degree angle to one another. This uncompromising energy reinforces the message that it is time for humanity to raise their game. At least if we want to maintain our habitat and sustain our environment here on Planet Earth. The implication is that if we don’t do it now, time will run out and the prospects for future generations will be eradicated.
Many of the changes which appear to be forced upon us are actually messages from the Cosmos. For example: the more you pollute your land, air and water, the less resistance you will have to viral and infectious disease. And: the more you interfere with the climatic and ecological balance of your home planet, the less habitable it will become for the human race.
On a personal level, you can tap into the influence of Aquarius to make significant changes in your own life. These could involve cutting down on your consumption of unnecessary products and services and cutting out any addiction to activities that are obviously not good for the planet. The era of “I want it, I’ll have it, it’s mine” is drawing to a close. There has to be far more “substance of we feeling” if humanity is to survive far into the future. It is not easy to relinquish the habits of a lifetime and those generations of lifetimes before yours but 2021 is the year to give it a try! Getting involved with groups, friends and kindred spirits who share your ideals, as well as your hopes and concerns for the future, could help you to stay on track.
20-26 January the Aquarian influence intensifies, with innovators Sun, Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius ranged against the stubborn resistance of Mars and Uranus in Taurus. This is likely to create an atmosphere of defiance and rebellion with all sides determined not to back down. It could feel like a war between the forces of forward movement and those who wish to consolidate a sense of control which is built on foundations that have already begun to crumble.
My advice is to stay out of it as far as you can. Do not watch the debate unless it affects you personally. Your time and energy are better spent on building a fairer future for you, your family, your friends, your people, your planet.
28 January Full Moon at 9-10° Leo
This full Moon could be showing us that, no matter how famous, influential and important a person perceives themselves to be, in the end their karma will catch up with them. The famous saying “pride comes before a fall” is very apt at this time. No one is immune from the need to account for their behaviour while they are on planet Earth. Big-hearted kindness and generosity are the true gifts of Leo, whereas pompous arrogance is the downfall of this sign.
The Full Moon is afflicted by oppositions from Saturn, Sun & Jupiter in Aquarius and squares from Uranus & Mars in Taurus and supported by a trine from Chiron in Aries. This suggests that, while the fallen mighty may be feeling seriously disappointed, dejected and rejected there is also a very real hope of great healing for those of us who have been suffering as a direct result of their selfishness.
28-29 January There are constructive conjunctions of Venus & Pluto in Capricorn today (28 January) and Sun & Jupiter in Aquarius tomorrow (29 January) which carry the potential for a far greater sharing of wealth and privilege than we have seen in recent times. The planets cannot promise immediate results and we may have to wait a while for the benefits to filter through. But we could be witnessing the beginning of the end of an era of obscene opulence controlled by a few fortunate individuals who hoard their billions while innocent children are abused, trafficked and starved.
“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another.” Nelson Mandela
30 January Mercury moves Retrograde in Aquarius
Firmly entrenched opinions could be reversed, possibly as a result of unexpected events or maybe because things are turning out totally differently from what was expected, or foretold. People with very strongly-held ideals might have to accept the need to compromise and give way on the more extreme versions of their views. Gaps in communication, understanding and interpretation will have to be bridged. This could involve a significant amount of reviewing, revising, and rewriting of data which was pushed through in order to meet deadlines. Information that seemed OK when it was issued could now be found to contain contradictions.
The best way to deal with this energy in your own life is to keep your mind open and be ready to cope with conflicting advice. Be prepared for sudden changes in direction. Don’t get too fixated on any specific idea or viewpoint, or too attached to any particular routine, regime or timetable. You may have to change your mind about it completely, due to the sudden arrival of new information, unforeseen developments or shifting perspectives.
It’s a good time to take another look at innovative ideas you have put on hold because they seemed too eccentric or unconventional. You may now see something in them that will enable you to give them mainstream appeal without losing their original freshness, or cutting edge quality. You could find that the world is becoming more receptive to views which previously would have been written off as weird or unworkable.
While Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius, you could also consider re-connecting to groups, friends and kindred spirits you have lost touch with, due to some sort of separation. Now is the time to shorten the distance between you, whether it be personal, practical or geographical.
